“I grow up in Italy with the heart in the South of the States. Southland, is a part of my personal path, a small gift to friends and everyone. My songs were born in di?erent days and moods. They are a southern folk-blues meditation on our destiny. Life and love, smiles and pains: these are my words. Blessing is my whisper. I hope to speak to your heart. To your skin. To your spirit. Because we are precious in God’s eyes: his gaze beyond the dark”.
This is SOUTHLAND the new cd of Valter Gatti, a journalist and musician from Italy, available on Amazon.it from 10th of november 2016.
Deeply inspired from the southern rock mood, Southland is a “folk-blues meditation” with ten songs played from some powerful musicians: Greg Martin (lead guitar from the Kentucky Headhunters), Chris Hicks (lead guitar from the Marshall Tucker Band) and Greg Koch (Telecaster axeman).
The producer of the cd is Michele Gazich (fiddle; he has a long list of international collaborations, from Mark Olson to Mary Gauthier, from Eric Andersen to Michelle Shocked),
Southland is produced from Michele Gazich, Paolo Costola and Valter Gatti.
The other musicians are true italian masters: Valerio Gaffurini (Hammond, Rhodes, Gran Piano and backing vocals), Larry Mancini (electric and acoustic bass), Alberto Pavesi (drums and percussion) and Raffaella Zago (backing vocals)
The songs
The Southland cd has ten songs: two covers and eight original titles.
The covers are: an acoustic psichedelic version of All Along the Watchtower (do you know mister B.Dylan?) and a very folky minimal interpretation of The Joker (S.Miller).
The Gatti’s songs are:
Southland
(a border-song, in the way of Ry Cooder);
Raffiche di vento
(an electric folksong, with a powerful guitar from Chris Hicks);
Your Town
(a deep gospel-blues with a precious Greg Martin’s solo, in a very Duane Allman spirit);
Longlife Blues
(a western country tune, with the slide of Greg Martin that lead the groove);
Take Me as I Am
(a piano ballad: a song that could feel the Leonard Cohen’s lesson);
Gloomy Witness
(a fast ballad with some Joe Ely flavour; the Telecaster of Greg Koch is full of shades);
In My Boots
(a rock-blues in the Stevie Ray mood: Greg Martin plays with a jazzy-rock attitude).
The last song, Dove Sei is an italian sweet and sunny love acoustic-song.
